10 Important Lessons From A Panhandler
While having a late afternoon cappuccino at an outside café on 3rd street in Santa Monica yesterday, I looked on in admiration as a panhandler approached people passing by.
As he moved around the street approaching people with his hand out and palm upwards that revealed some quarters in it... he asked each one a simple question;
Do you have a quarter so that I can get a hamburger?
I started to list the things he was doing that most network marketers and direct sales people could take a lesson from.
- He was committed to change (pun intended) - Changing an empty stomach to a full one
- His question was clear and concise and had an economy to it
- His message was clear, especially with the visual of the quarters in his hand and the mention of the hamburger. There was no mistaking what he wanted
- He made it easy for everyone to take action in that most people have a quarter
- He took consistent action
- He was persistent while not being pushy
- He was polite
- He looked people in the eye
- He moved around the street to where the people were
- He took the “no” responses he was dealt as part of the process without having a psychological meltdown, even when a couple of people were quite rude to him
I’ve said this many times that the degree a person will change their present circumstances is largely dependent on the degree of discomfort they have about their present situation combined with a desire to take action and do something about it.
Obviously this panhandler was uncomfortable with his present situation and was motivated to do something consistently and methodically.
So how uncomfortable are YOU and how strong is YOUR desire to make a change? Not only that, how committed are you to approaching and talking with people on a consistent basis?
Knowing how, requires the correct skills and mental attitude. It's no secret that the people who seem to get the most out of their professional and personal life have great people and communication skills.
